Author Toolbox Blog Hop – Accountability

This post was written specifically for the #AuthorToolboxBlogHop.

If you’re anything like me (and for your sake, I generally hope not), you struggle getting things done. Whether it’s working to a daily word count, a deadline or really any other target, you find it slipping away from you. And then you start asking yourself what you could have done differently.

One answer is to be more diligent, have a better work ethic, etc. That can be easier said than done. The thing is, like any other habit, that needs to be developed over time. And, if you’re already struggling, then you can easily fall into a vicious spiral where you don’t do so well, so you lose confidence which leads you to not do so well and so on; which is pretty much the antithesis of what you’re trying to achieve.

What I’m going to try is making a series of accountability posts, possibly once a week, detailing how much I’ve written and on what projects. The idea is that by making my progress (or lack thereof) public, I’m making myself accountable to reading it. True, I can see how this might leave me open to either scorn or ridicule but I chose to believe that those of you read my posts here, on Facebook or on Twitter will be more likely to be sympathetic and encouraging than anything else. I’m hoping that my innate desire not to disappoint people will help me kick-start things back into motion.

So without further ado, here’s my first accountability post. And since it is my first I’m going to cover the entire month so far.

  • Word count on House In Exile – 0
  • Word count on other work – 367
  • Blog posts written – 3
  • Reviews written – 1

A couple of other things before I wrap this up. First, I’d like to thank T.L. Greylock for giving me the idea for this post. Second, I’d like to wish AuthorToolbox creator Raimey Gallant a belated happy birthday. And finally, I’d like to remind all of you reading this to take care of yourselves. Don’t get so caught up in work or the things you think you should be doing that you ignore your own well-being. It’s okay to put yourself first at times. 1. I think being accountable is a good idea for you to do. For me, not so much. Ha. This exercise will hopefully help you to be more productive and not leave you with guilt for not living up to your expectations. Perhapsyou could try to be more accountable about the time you spend on writing. Set a goal of 30 minutes a day, every day and see if you actually do it.?? Good luck!

  2. Great progress 🙂
At the moment I keep myself accountable in monthly update posts, but I’m thinking that’s not enough as I sometimes struggle to stay on track. Maybe I’ll trial weekly!
