The end of August is rapidly approaching (where exactly has this year gone, anyway?) which means we’re only a couple of months away from some things of note. The first is our (almost) annual holiday in Florida. Good news; you can expect another post about Halloween Horror Nights, mid-October. The other is NaNoWriMo. I’ve been giving the latter a little bit of thought over the past few days.
Last year, my decision to have a go at NaNoWriMo happened on some short notice; less than a week before the beginning of November, if I recall correctly. So, needless to say, there was a bit of scrambling to work out how I was going to go about it and what I was going to do as my project. Then, once the month started, I was pretty much winging it.
This time around, I want to give myself a better chance at succeeding. I’ve made the decision to try again well in advance so the first thing I need to do is decide on a project. At this point, I have three options:
- House in Exile.
- Returning to last years story.
- Something brand new.
There are benefits to each, of course. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not as far along with House in Exile as I wanted to be, so maybe using it this year will help me catch up. On the other hand, I did enjoy playing around in a different world last year so maybe that’s some thing that could help re-energize me again. Whether that means going back to that same world (only this time having done a bit more groundwork) or something fresh is one of the things I have to work out.
In fact, I can see making planning my 2017 NaNoWriMo project part of my goals for September and October. I deliberately entitled this Part 1 to push myself into doing more posts, so expect updates on this over the next few weeks. Hopefully, if I can get myself in a position to hit the ground running this time.
Nice! I’m thinking about doing it this year too, but my only concern is that my editor will return the edits at that time for book 1. So it’s going to be interesting. I’ll outline book 2 soon though so that I only need to write in November.
