New Events

One of the things I’m still learning is how social media can be used as a key component in a writer’s career. Not that the concept was completely foreign to me; I’ve had Facebook for years and I even met my wife thanks to Myspace (yes, I am that old), but I’m still finding new ways people are using it to connect, build word of mouth, etc. Case in point, this weekend saw a first for me, with another scheduled for a couple of days time.

On Saturday, I attended (can you still use that word in an online context?) the Cover Reveal Party for Darkstorm by M.L. Spencer. Now, since I read, reviewed and very much enjoyed M.L’s other book Darkmage, I was only too happy to accept the invitation and I’m glad I did, because not only did I enjoy myself; I also got some ideas for other reads and connect with some new people.

Over the two hours the event was scheduled for, not only did we get the cover image, we got a book trailer, introductions to some of the characters (It turns out that M.L. is talented with a sketchpad, as well)  but we got to play a couple games, ask questions, the chance to win some prizes and just generally have fun.

Later this week, I have an invitation to the release party for The Fell by Lyndsey Harper. I haven’t read this author before but the invite came courtesy of the co-host, Joshua Robertson (who I have read) so I marked myself down as interested. The only drawback to this event is that; since it’s taking place on Wednesday, I’ll be at work for pretty much the entire duration. I’m sure I’ll at least get a chance to check in during my lunch break, but I doubt I’ll be able to be as interactive as I was on Saturday.

I know I have a long ways to go before I’ll be a position to even consider doing something like this for myself. But still, it’s something to keep in mind and I do hope I get to see more of these soon.
